“I” 2025
Oil on canvas
28 x 35 cm
The Multiplicity of 'I' explores the fragmented, shifting nature of identity through a surreal, semiotic lens. Li constructs an intricate visual language where the "I" is not singular but dispersed across objects, symbols, and body parts.
At the heart of this series is the cherry, a recurring motif that functions as both a personal and universal signifier. In surrealist traditions, fruit often symbolises transformation, yet in Li’s paintings, the cherry plays a more introspective role—a quiet witness to the self’s constant evolution. Sometimes attached, sometimes detached, at times intact, at times altered, it becomes a marker of the fluid, performative nature of identity. Li’s works reflect a self that is never fixed but always in flux, shaped by memory, language, and the subconscious.
Through layers of surreal compositions, Li’s work invites the viewer to navigate the tension between recognition and estrangement, offering a meditation on the multiple, shifting selves we inhabit.
This collection contains nine oil paintings.
